Veteran Nollywood actor Kanayo O. Kanayo has thrown his weight behind singer Davido following the backlash over his candid remarks about Nigeria’s struggling economy.
Recall that Davido, during a recent appearance on the US-based podcast The Big Homies House, didn’t mince words about the nation’s challenges. He described the situation back home as dire, stating, “It is not cool back home. The economy is in shambles.”
The singer even went as far as advising Black Americans against relocating to Nigeria—a comment that sparked a wave of criticism among Nigerians.
While some have called for Davido to apologize, Kanayo has risen to his defense, emphasizing the importance of freedom of speech and the need to address the real issues plaguing the country.
In a video shared on Instagram, Kanayo passionately urged critics to respect Davido’s perspective, saying, “@davido spoke his mind, isn’t it not? Respect his views too. The Adelekes can feed for life, but it will be unholy if they assume all is OK because they are OK. Make una leave Davido alone over the comment he made. It is freedom of speech, and he made the statement in good faith. It is left for those in power to work harder to give us a better Nigeria.”
Kanayo dismissed the demand for an apology, arguing that Davido was merely voicing the struggles of everyday Nigerians.
“Those who criticize us want the best out of us. Davido speaks for other Nigerians who cannot feed,” he added, underscoring the urgency of tackling the country’s economic woes.
