Kamala Harris, the U.S. Democratic presidential candidate, has conceded the 2024 election to Donald Trump after his decisive win.
According to a senior aide, Harris called Trump on Wednesday to congratulate him and “discussed the importance of a peaceful transfer of power” and the role of “being a president for everyone in the country,” as reported by Al Jazeera.
During the call, Harris reportedly emphasised her commitment to unity and urged the nation to come together.
She is expected to make her first public remarks since the loss in Washington, D.C., later today.
Trump, who secured over 270 electoral votes, will return to the White House as the 47th President of the United States after losing the office to Joe Biden in 2020.
His victory this year was bolstered by support from voters prioritising economic concerns, inflation, and immigration issues, which exit polls identified as decisive factors in key battleground states.
Harris’s historic candidacy came after Biden withdrew from the race in July, citing health concerns.
After receiving Biden’s endorsement, the 60-year-old Vice President ran a spirited campaign that centred on economic recovery, reproductive rights, and inclusivity.
Her platform particularly resonated with young voters and women concerned about reproductive rights following the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision to overturn constitutional abortion protections.
