Judge’s Absence Delays Ruling on Binance Exec’s Bail in Alleged Money Laundering Case

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday postponed the ruling on a fresh bail application filed by Tigran Gambaryan, an executive of Binance Holdings Limited, due to the absence of presiding Judge, Justice Emeka Nwite.

The judge was attending a seminar at the National Judicial Institute (NJI) in Abuja, prompting the rescheduling of the ruling to October 11.

Gambaryan’s legal team, led by Mark Mordi, had previously moved for bail on health grounds, but the application was opposed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Counsel for the EFCC, Ekele Iheanacho, argued that Gambaryan was receiving adequate medical treatment from the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) and had rejected an intervention from the State House Clinic in Abuja.

Iheanacho presented medical reports showing Gambaryan’s care, stating, “The report from Nizamiye Hospital and others indicated that Gambaryan has been receiving proper medical attention. His health is not as critical as portrayed, and the NCoS can take him to any hospital in Nigeria if needed.” He urged the court to dismiss the fresh bail request.

Mordi, representing Gambaryan, countered that the medical reports indicated a serious health challenge that could not be effectively managed in Nigeria, and pleaded for the court to grant bail on liberal terms or for six weeks on health grounds.

The case will now be heard on October 11.
