The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), through a statement by its spokesman, Amb. Binebai Princewill, has called for the arrest of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, following what it described as reckless and inflammatory remarks.
According to the IYC, Wike’s recent statement, in which he allegedly threatened to inflame PDP-controlled states if governors interfere with Rivers State politics, is dangerous to the country’s peace and security.
Princewill emphasized that Wike’s comments should not be ignored by the Inspector-General of Police and other security agencies, as they pose a significant threat to the stability of the country.
“The unbridled impunity with which Wike speaks has reached a boiling point. The IYC warns Wike and his allies to allow Governor Fubara Siminalaye to govern Rivers State peacefully,” he said.
The statement follows a similar call by elder statesman Chief Edwin Clark, who urged the arrest of Wike for undermining the Rivers State government and threatening national security.
The IYC stressed that the comments attributed to Wike should not be dismissed, as they risk plunging the country into further chaos.
Princewill reiterated that the IYC, while remaining apolitical, cannot stay silent on such issues that threaten Nigeria’s security.
“Allowing impunity to reign unchecked will only lead to unrest in an already fragile nation,” he said.
The group called on the federal government and security agencies to take swift action, warning that continued silence would signal that figures like Wike are above the law.
The IYC also criticized Wike’s opposition to Governor Fubara, warning that it would not benefit him, as the people of Rivers State and the Ijaw nation stand firmly behind their governor.
“The Ijaw people do not lose battles,” Princewill declared, expressing confidence that Wike’s actions would ultimately backfire.
In closing, the IYC called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to uphold the rule of law and act decisively in maintaining peace and security across the nation.
“If the likes of Wike are key figures in this government, it raises serious concerns about the direction of Nigeria’s future,” the statement concluded.
