Peoples Democratic Party Senate caucus members, on Wednesday, staged a walkout from the Chambers to protest the worsening insecurity in the country.
Senate Minority Leader, Philip Aduda, told newsmen after he and other lawmakers walked out of the Chambers in anger, disclosed that they had given President Muhammadu Buhari a six-week ultimatum to combat terrorist attacks in the country or face impeachment.
Aduda was flanked by other PDP Senate caucus members at the press briefing.
The PDP senators said they raised the impeachment matter during a two-hour closed-door session but the Senate President showed he was not willing to allow the matter to be tabled at the plenary despite their agreement.
Aduda said it had become imperative for the insecurity matter to be addressed immediately because, “it’s obvious that Abuja, the seat of the Federal Government is no longer safe, as you all can see.”
Aduda said since various recommendations by the National Assembly had been made but security challenges persisted, the only available option was to impeach President Buhari immediately.
The Minority Leader Aduda who represents the Federal Capital Territory in the Senate said, “We went into a closed-door session on the state of insecurity in Abuja and took cognisance that Nigeria is no longer safe.
“Senate has recommended various measures and discovered that even Abuja is no longer safe.
“We agreed in the closed session that we will give President Muhammadu Buhari an ultimatum, but the Senate President Dr Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan, didn’t want us to raise the issue.
“However, we have issued six weeks for President Buhari to resolve insecurity or be impeached.
“We walked out of Chambers in protest.”
