INEC Denies Recognising New Labour Party Leadership

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed reports suggesting it has recognised new national officers of the Labour Party (LP), insisting that no decision has been taken on the leadership dispute within the party.

INEC made this known on its official X handle, in a press statement issued on Thursday, 8 May, by Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman.

“Our attention has been drawn to some media reports claiming that the Commission has recognised certain persons as the National Chairman and National Secretary of the Labour Party (LP),” the statement read.

According to the Commission, such reports are “false and misleading,” adding that, “the Commission has not made any decision in respect of either the LP or PDP.”

Oyekanmi clarified that previous listings on INEC’s website were the result of a court order and not linked to any recent judgment.

“The names of the National Officers of the LP had previously been uploaded to our website following a court order, not related in any way to the latest judgement of the Supreme Court,” he explained.

INEC also addressed speculation regarding the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stating that no changes were made to its records.

“The name of the National Secretary of the PDP on the same website was neither deleted nor reinstated,” the statement said.

Oyekanmi stressed that the Commission is proceeding with caution following the Supreme Court’s decision, saying: “As a law-abiding institution, the Commission is carefully studying the judgement of the Supreme Court on the Labour Party and will communicate its decision to the public in due course.”
