The Independent National Electoral Commission has bowed to pressure by political parties to extend the deadline for the conduct of 2023 general elections primaries.
The commission, following the request by the parties, have extended the deadline by six days.
INEC had initially fixed the deadline for June 3.
An earlier effort by the political parties to have the deadline extended failed as the INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu maintained that the primaries must be completed as scheduled.
However, after a meeting of the leaders of political parties and Yakubu on Friday at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja on Friday, INEC yielded to the request of the parties.
FirstNews had earlier reported that Yakubu said the electoral body was considering extending the deadline for the primaries as requested by the parties.
