Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have urged former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa to refrain from actions they believe could escalate tensions following his removal from office on January 13.
Obasa, who has denied allegations of corruption, described the claims as unfounded and politically motivated.
At a welcome event held in his honour in Ikeja GRA, Obasa addressed accusations of financial mismanagement, including spending ₦16 billion on a gate and ₦47 billion on 45 Hilux vehicles.
He refuted these allegations, stating, “Is it possible to construct an ordinary gate with ₦16 billion? It is not the wall of Jericho or the one separating the U.S. and Mexico.
“How can they say we bought one Hilux bus for ₦1 billion each and 40 pieces for ₦40 billion? These claims are baseless.”
Obasa emphasised his commitment to disproving the allegations, adding, “I am not disturbed, perturbed, or afraid. I have been a lawmaker for over two decades and am the longest-serving member of the House. I will address these allegations head-on and prove my innocence.”
Reacting to his removal, he stated, “There was no impeachment process, only an attempt that lacked due process. I am not afraid of being removed.
“After all, it is not my father’s chieftaincy title. I represent my people, and they have returned me six times. If you want to do anything, do it well.”
However, in a statement issued by Ogundipe Olukayode, a member representing Oshodi State Constituency I, the House maintained that Obasa’s removal followed proper procedures and reflected the will of the majority.
“The majority of members who elected Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the 10th Assembly also decided to remove him. Over two-thirds of us stand united behind the new Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda,” the statement read.
It further cautioned Obasa against actions that could “heat up the polity,” urging him to adopt a more conciliatory approach. “Peace we want in Lagos, and peace we will achieve,” Olukayode concluded.
