The Imo State Police Command announced a successful operation on Tuesday in its ongoing efforts to combat crime.
In a statement by command spokesperson Henry Okoye, the police detailed how operatives from the Counter-Terrorism Unit repelled an attack by suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Eastern Security Network (ESN) along the Owerri/Aba Road near Owerri Airport.
“The attackers, numbering about ten and travelling in two vehicles, launched a violent assault but were effectively countered by the unit, demonstrating notable bravery,” Okoye said.
During the clash, one suspect was neutralised, while the rest fled with gunshot injuries, leaving behind an ash-coloured Mercedes Jeep, Lagos registration AAA 101 GR.
Police recovered an AK-47 rifle, 15 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, an IPOB/ESN flag, and the abandoned vehicle, and they are currently searching nearby bushes for the remaining suspects.
Okoye confirmed there were no injuries among police operatives.
The Imo Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, urged the public, particularly medical professionals, to report any individuals seeking treatment for gunshot wounds to local authorities.
“The command remains committed to ensuring the safety of all citizens and will continue to address any threats to public peace in the state,” the statement read.
