Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has ordered an investigation into allegations of mistreatment of minors detained during the recent #EndBadGovernance protests.
Recall that 76 suspects, primarily minors who appeared malnourished, were brought to court on Friday.
Disturbingly, six of these minors collapsed in court and required medical attention.
Responding to the incident on Saturday, Egbetokun claimed that the fainting was a staged act to provoke negative public attention, adding that medical aid was provided immediately.
He underscored the police’s commitment to safeguarding the welfare of those in custody.
Following public outrage, President Bola Tinubu directed on Monday that all charges against the minors be dropped.
Later that evening, Police Force Spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi confirmed that the IGP had ordered an investigation into the conditions the minors faced in detention.
Adejobi stated, “Upon receiving the investigative report today in Glasgow, where the IGP is attending the Interpol General Assembly, the IGP vowed to thoroughly examine it and address any procedural lapses or concerns.”
Adejobi also disclosed that the IGP has called for a workshop focused on child-friendly investigation practices, scheduled for 7th November at the Police Resource Centre in Jabi, Abuja.
“To further ensure professionalism in investigations with an emphasis on child-friendly investigation and care, the IGP has summoned all Deputy Commissioners of Criminal Investigation Department (DCs CID) and Heads of Investigation Units,” Adejobi said.
“The Nigeria Police Force reaffirms its commitment to upholding legal frameworks, ensuring fairness, and accountability, especially for vulnerable groups,” he added.
