Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has firmly rejected any involvement in the October 2020 #EndSARS protests and the subsequent property destruction in Lagos State.
He made this denial in a video shown during his ongoing trial at the Abuja Federal High Court on the 8th of May, 2025.
As the trial resumed, the prosecution, led by Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, called its second witness: a Department of State Services (DSS) agent, who continued his testimony against Kanu.
The prosecution also played a video where Kanu was interviewed by DSS operatives at their Abuja headquarters on the 17th of July, 2021.
In the footage, Kanu was asked whether he was aware that his broadcast on October 20, 2020, incited violence, killings, and the destruction of public infrastructure in Lagos State.

In his response, Kanu stated that Lagos is not part of Biafra, and as such, he could not be held responsible for the events that transpired there.
He further emphasized, “I swear in the name of God that created heaven and earth, I have no hand and I know absolutely nothing about the riot and destruction that happened in Lagos during #EndSARS.”
Kanu went on to assert, “If I had authority over people, I wouldn’t be calling for a referendum. I would have just woken up one day and said “let’s create Biafra.”
The judge, Justice James Omotosho, adjourned the trial to May 14, 21, and 22 for further proceedings.
