I Owe No One Loyalty — Atiku’s Former Aide, Sowunmi Speaks Out

Segun Sowunmi, a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), made it clear during a recent appearance on Channels TV’s Politics Today that his loyalty lies with no one in particular and that doesn’t make him an enemy of President Bola Tinubu.

Sowunmi, who served as the spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar during the 2023 presidential race, addressed public reactions following his visit to the president. Many had interpreted the meeting as a shift in loyalty, but Sowunmi didn’t mince words.

“I am at liberty as an adult to take decisions. I am not tied to anybody. I am not anti-Tinubu. I own my mouth, I own my words, and I own my arguments.”

He didn’t stop there. While drawing comparisons among Nigeria’s leading political figures, Sowunmi offered a sharp assessment of Tinubu’s political edge: “Do you know the difference between Bola and them? He doesn’t have one approach to dealing with everybody. By miles, he (Tinubu) is smarter than them. He is smarter than Peter Obi, he is smarter than them.”

Sowunmi isn’t the only former Atiku ally now seen in Tinubu’s orbit. Back in November 2024, Daniel Bwala once a fierce critic of Tinubu and also a former Atiku spokesman accepted an appointment as Special Adviser on Policy Communication to the President after a similar meeting at the villa.

The trend raises one question, Are these visits a shift in ideology or just political pragmatism at work?
