Gunmen launched a deadly assault on the Umunze Police Station in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State on Monday, killing two officers on duty.
This attack comes just two weeks after a similar incident at the Divisional Police Station in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area.
Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers, armed with improvised explosives, opened fire on the station, setting part of it ablaze. The two officers, who attempted to resist the onslaught, were gunned down during the confrontation.
Confirming the tragic event, Anambra State Police Command spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated, “The bodies of the deceased officers have been recovered and taken to the mortuary.”
He further disclosed that a joint security force had been deployed to track down the perpetrators.
“Five unexploded improvised explosives were recovered from the scene,” Ikenga added.
Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono Itam, visited the site for a spot assessment and reassessment of security deployment. He appealed to the public for information that could assist in the investigation, assuring that such intelligence would be treated with utmost confidentiality.
This attack marks the second major assault on a police facility in Anambra State in the last two weeks, fueling growing concerns over the rising insecurity in the region.
Reacting to the incident, House of Representatives member Princess Chinwe Nnabuife condemned the attack, describing it as “senseless,” and expressed her condolences to the families of the slain officers.
“My office is working tirelessly with relevant federal government security agencies to address the security challenges facing Umunze and Orumba,” Nnabuife said.
“We are committed to ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice, and measures are put in place to prevent future incidents.”
She urged the community to remain calm, vigilant, and to cooperate with security agencies in their efforts to restore peace and order.
