Suspected gunmen have killed a policeman and four civilians returning from a burial in Rivers State.
The gunmen reportedly ambushed police officers serving in Bayelsa State returning from a burial of a colleague, late Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Gilbert Samson, in Rivers State.
The incident, which reportedly occurred on Saturday, May 14, 2022, at about 0745 hours, led to some other police officers and civilians sustaining severe injuries.
Spokesman for Bayelsa State Police Command, Asinim Butswat, a Superintendent of Police, confirmed the incident.
He said the attacked officers were serving at Rivers Command at Idema-Otuabagi Road, Ogbia Local Government Area, Bayelsa State.
Butswat said the suspected gunmen opened fire at the vehicle conveying the police officers and other civilians.
He said: “In the process, Police Constable Asuo Osuani, male, and Special Constabulary Odeoye Sampson, male, Mr Terry Lucky, Jennifer Adejo ‘f’ and Asueroh Tobins ‘f’ were fatally shot and later died.
“Inspector Urere Edwin, Rejoice Sampson ‘f’ and Reward Sampson ‘f’ sustained bullets injuries and are responding to treatment.”
Butswat said the Commissioner of Police, Bayelsa State Command, Ben Nebolisa Okolo, had ordered a manhunt for the gunmen who perpetrated the dastardly act.
He said an investigation was ongoing.
