Gov Yusuf Unveils N549.16bn 2025 Budget Proposal to Kano Assembly

The Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has presented a proposed N549.16 billion budget for the 2025 fiscal year to the state assembly, alongside a 77 percent performance of the 2024 budget.

Speaking at the State Assembly on the 8th of November, 2024, Governor Yusuf outlined that the capital expenditure for the 2025 budget is set at N312.63 billion, while recurrent expenditure is projected at N236.53 billion.

Once approved by the State Assembly, the budget will reflect a capital-to-recurrent ratio of 57:43 percent.

A significant portion of the capital spending will focus on the social and economic sectors, amounting to N461.45 billion.

Key sectors receiving funding include education, with N168.35 billion (31%), health, with N90.60 billion (16.5%), agriculture, with N21.04 billion (3.83%), and infrastructure development, which will receive N70.68 billion (12.87%).

Additional allocations include N3.89 billion (1.22%) for manufacturing, commerce, industry, and tourism; N15.52 billion (2.83%) for environmental and sanitation efforts; and N98.24 billion (17.57%) dedicated to governance institutions.

Governor Yusuf also highlighted the performance of the 2024 budget, noting that its N437.3 billion allocation achieved a 77 percent overall performance, with recurrent revenue and expenditure standing at 65 percent.

He attributed much of this success to the blocking of financial leakages.

Reflecting on the challenges of 2024, the governor expressed concern over the difficulties faced by citizens, particularly in light of protests spurred by the Federal Government’s economic reforms, price hikes, and the volatile exchange rate.

He acknowledged that the August protests served as a stark reminder of the importance of addressing youth concerns, stressing that the state’s response to their needs would be crucial in avoiding potential unrest.

In response, the Kano government has committed to launching various youth-centered programs to ensure their well-being and engagement.
