The Federal Government has commended Ghana for fulfilling its promise to rebuild and formally hand over a property belonging to the Nigerian High Commission in Accra.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the acting spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, it was revealed that the reconstructed property, a block of four-bedroom flats, was handed over during a ceremony in Accra.
The building had been demolished in 2020 by Ghanaian authorities, a move that was strongly criticised by Nigeria at the time.
Following high-level diplomatic engagements, Ghana pledged to reconstruct the property, a commitment that has now been honoured.
Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Mrs Shirley Ayorkor Botchway, handed over the keys to the new building.
Representing Nigeria at the event was Ambassador Chimezie Ogu, Director of the Foreign Service Academy, Lagos, who received the property on behalf of the Federal Government.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the development as a commendable act, reflecting Ghana’s dedication to fostering strong bilateral relations.
“The handing over by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration of Ghana, Her Excellency Mrs Shirley Ayorkor Botchway, is seen as a commendable development and a symbol of Ghana’s commitment to strengthening the ties between both countries,” the statement read.
It added that the reconstructed building serves as a representation of the cooperation and mutual respect that define the relationship between the two West African nations.
The Federal Government expressed its appreciation to Ghana, reiterating the importance of continued collaboration to further cement the longstanding friendship between the countries.
