The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, has filed a ₦5 billion lawsuit against Yoruba Nation activist Chief Sunday Adeyemo, known as Sunday Igboho, at the Oyo State High Court, claiming that Igboho unlawfully recorded and shared a private phone conversation without his consent.
In suit number M/1006/2024, Adams argues that Igboho’s actions violated his fundamental rights under Section 37 of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution, which protects the right to privacy.
Adams’ statement describes the recording as “unlawful, illegal, and unconstitutional,” labelling Igboho’s conduct as “reckless and injurious” to his role as the Aare Ona Kakanfo.
According to Adams, Igboho shared the private conversation on social media in April 2024, causing him “serious embarrassment” and damaging his reputation.
He contends that his privacy was invaded and is seeking exemplary damages to address the impact of the incident.
The case, which highlights the boundaries of privacy rights in Nigeria, could set a precedent regarding the legality of recording and releasing private conversations without mutual consent.
