The aggrieved governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) known as the G-5 Governors have arrived in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, from London.
The governors who described themselves as the Integrity Group are Nyesom Wike (Rivers), Samuel Ortom (Benue), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), and Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia).
To support Atiku Abubakar’s bid for president in the 2023 elections, the five governors have sought the resignation of Senator Iyorchia Ayu, the PDP National Chairman.
The governors had flown to the UK on Wednesday for what might have been referred to as a strategic conference. This came after they were unsure about who to support for president in the general elections of 2023.
The governors have constantly insisted that a Southerner become the next leader of Nigeria, notwithstanding their refusal to support the PDP’s presidential nominee Atiku, because both he and the party’s National Chairman are from the same northern region.
Although there is no official confirmation, there were allegations that the G5 governors had made a deal with Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), in London.
But Wike had previously stated that he would announce his preferred presidential candidate in January 2023. According to some commentators, the Rivers leader may support Mr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party because of the massive youth support he enjoys.
