President Bola Tinubu has reiterated the necessity of removing the petrol subsidy, emphasising its importance for Nigeria’s economic stability and future growth.

Speaking on Saturday at a town hall meeting in Enugu after inaugurating several projects by Governor Peter Mbah, Tinubu explained that the decision was crucial to prevent the country from slipping into bankruptcy.

He stated, “We must build this house called Nigeria to not just satisfy our immediate need, but our tomorrow too. That’s why the removal of the fuel subsidy was necessary.

“We cannot spend the future of generations yet unborn in advance. Don’t bankrupt the nation before they’re born.”

The President praised Governor Mbah for his governance and developmental strides, particularly in technology and private-sector engagement.

“He is doing a fantastic job. I am glad that Enugu got a very good job tomorrow, today. I salute Peter Mbah for his commitment to development.

“You have built up a good team. You have encouraged me on the technological advancement of the state,” Tinubu said.

Tinubu also commended Mbah’s security initiatives, particularly the launch of the Distress Response Squad.

He added, “There’s no better investment than the investment to secure lives.”

Stressing unity, Tinubu declared, “I don’t care which party you come from. You are my friend. You are doing well and very focused.”

In response, Governor Mbah expressed gratitude to the President for signing the South East Development Commission Bill into law.

He described the commission as pivotal in addressing the region’s ecological and infrastructural challenges while complementing Enugu’s development plans.

Mbah highlighted his administration’s ambition to expand the state’s economy from $4.4 billion to $30 billion within four to eight years. He said this goal required decisive actions like ending an illegal sit-at-home order imposed by criminal gangs in the Southeast.

“Our efforts are geared towards making Enugu one of Nigeria’s top three states in GDP terms,” Mbah stated, reiterating his administration’s commitment to fostering security and economic growth.
