The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has strongly condemned the latest hike in fuel prices and electricity tariffs, expressing concern over the growing hardship it will impose on Nigerian workers.
In a statement released on Wednesday, TUC President, Comrade Festus Osifo, urged the Federal Government to reverse these policies, emphasizing their detrimental impact on the welfare of ordinary Nigerians, particularly the working class.
Osifo criticized the government’s unilateral decision-making process, stating that the fuel and electricity price hikes were “implemented without consultation with critical stakeholders.”
He further warned that these decisions would only deepen poverty and fuel potential social unrest, especially as Nigerians are already grappling with economic challenges.
“The sudden hike in fuel and electricity costs will only exacerbate these challenges, leading to further hardship and potential social unrest,” Osifo remarked.
He stressed the need for policies that would stabilize the naira and alleviate the country’s economic difficulties, urging the government to act swiftly to restore public confidence and prevent further deterioration of living standards.
In addition to criticizing the fuel price hike, the TUC also condemned the recent 250% increase in electricity tariffs.
The union highlighted the essential nature of electricity for the survival of the poorest in society, noting that the magnitude and timing of these increases reflect a lack of empathy for the struggles faced by ordinary Nigerians.
“Why does it have to be the common Nigerians bearing all the pains of high cost of living while those in power enjoy increased allocation and affluence?” the TUC questioned, calling on the government to reduce the cost of governance and focus on strengthening the naira and improving the standard of living.
The TUC reiterated its commitment to advocating for policies that ensure social justice, fair wages, and a decent work environment, vowing to continue defending the rights of Nigerian workers.
