Tension has returned to Benue State as suspected herdsmen launched fresh attacks on Monday evening, June 9, in Agatu and Apa local government areas, leaving at least four people dead.
In Agatu, one of the victims was Sunday Dutse, a native of Odejo community and younger brother to a former local government chairman.
Dutse had been displaced by a previous attack and was taking refuge in Ogwule-Kaduna, also in Agatu, when he was ambushed and killed along the Odugbeho-Ogbaulu road.

Earlier that day, violence broke out in EdikwG’Icho, a community in Apa LGA, where three young men were reportedly ambushed and killed. Two of the victims were from EdikwG’Icho, while the third hailed from Ugbokpo.
The renewed attacks are especially troubling as they come shortly after a visit from top military officials, including the Chief of Army Staff, who had assured residents of improved security in the troubled areas.
Despite those promises, locals say they remain vulnerable, with many now questioning how soon real protection will reach their communities.
