Freedom at Last: Speed Darlington Walks Out of Kuje Prison

Controversial Nigerian singer Darlington Okoye, fondly called Speed Darlington or “Akpi,” has finally tasted freedom after his stint in Kuje Prison.

The news was revealed on the 21st of January, 2025, by activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju, who took to X (formerly Twitter) to share the update: “Speed Darlington is out of Kuje Prison.”

The embattled artist was granted bail by an Abuja court after the Nigeria Police Force, under mounting pressure, formally arraigned him.

Speed Darlington’s troubles began when he filed a petition to DIG Dasuki Galadanchi, Deputy Inspector-General of Police at the Force Intelligence Bureau in Abuja, urging compliance with a court order.

The order challenged his extended detention, accusing the police of holding him unlawfully.

His arrest stemmed from allegations he made against Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Burna Boy. Speed Darlington had accused Burna Boy of having an improper relationship with U.S. rapper and music mogul Sean Combs, popularly known as P. Diddy.

However, Justice M.S. Liman stepped in on the 23rd of December 2024, issuing a decisive ruling: the police were ordered to either charge Okoye within 48 hours or release him unconditionally.

Now a free man, Speed Darlington’s release marks a pivotal chapter in a saga filled with controversy, legal battles, and public drama.
