Global human rights organisation, Amnesty International, on Tuesday, demanded the release of the Convener of the #Revolution Now Movement and publisher of SaharaReporters, Omoyele Sowore, and four others currently being detained for protesting on New Year Eve.
AI urged the President Muhammadu Buhari administration to immediately release Sowore and the other activists who were remanded in the Kuje Correctional Centre on Monday.
@AmnestyNigeria tweeted on Tuesday, “Nigerian must authorities to immediately and unconditionally release activist Omoyele Sowore and other activists who were arrested by the police during a New Year’s Eve peaceful protest in Abuja.”
Recall that Sowore and the other activists were arrested on New Year’s Eve in Abuja for holding a protest against bad governance.
They were subsequently arraigned on three charges of criminal conspiracy, unlawful assembly, and attempting to incite others but the activists denied the charges.
Sowore, who was earlier declared a prisoner of conscience by Amnesty International in 2019, was detained for several months by the Buhari administration for allegedly calling for a revolution.
He was denied bail several times and even re-arrested inside the Federal High Court. But he was released after domestic and international pressure in December 2019.
