‘Focus on blue economy’, Crescent Varsity best graduating student advises Tinubu’s govt

In an interview, the 2022/2023 best graduating student of Crescent University, Abeokuta, Miss Opeoluwa Rukayat Shekoni has advised the Bola Tinubu government to focus on blue economy. The 19-year old graduate of Economics and native of Lagos Island also stressed how Crescent University has impacted moral uprightness and decency in her, among others. Excerpts:

Can you introduce yourself?

A:My name is Miss Opeoluwa Rukayat Shekoni,the best graduating student at Crescent University Abeokuta 2023.

As the 2023 best graduating student of Crescent University Abeokuta, how did you feel when you got the news?

I was super excited and I felt so proud of myself. I was also filled with gratitude because this was only possible with the help of Allah.

When you got admitted four years ago, did you set out to be a valedictorian that you are now? What was your goal?

Four years ago, I wasn’t thinking about being the valedictorian. I was only concerned about getting a degree. Initially, the goal was to graduate with a first class.

What is your final CGPA?

I graduated with a 4.98 Cummulative Grade Point Average

How and when do you prefer to study?

I prefer to study in a very quiet environment. I also prefer to study in the midnight because that’s when the hostel is quiet and I can be focused.

What was your most challenging course in the university and why?

My most challenging course in the university was Advanced Macroeconomics. This is because it is very complex and it uses graphs to analyze a lot of economic concepts.

Crescent University Abeokuta, like many other academic institutions, has produced more female best graduating students. What do you think is responsible for this?

I have observed that female students are more productive and dedicated to their studies. Most female students know how to put away any form of distraction and set priorities better than the male students.

What has Crescent University taught you in the course of your study?

In Crescent University, I have learnt to manage my relationship with people given the diversity in human nature and disposition. Crescent University has also taught me to be morally upright and develop better character.

How has academic and moral excellence of Crescent University positively impacted on you?

Academically, I have gained so much knowledge from crescent university. In terms of moral excellence, crescent university has taught me so much about decent dressing, inter-personal relationships, and team work.

As an economist, what advice would you give President Bola Tinubu government?

An area that the present government can focus on in order to turn the economy around is the blue economy. Blue economy is the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihood and jobs while preserving the ocean ecosystem health. Through the use of blue economy, there will eventually be spillovers on real sectors of the economy.

Can you shed more light on this?

The real sectors of the economy are the sectors that produce tangible goods and services. These sectors include agriculture , manufacturing, construction, and mining. Introducing blue economy will have a positive effect on the real sectors of the economy.

My favourite lecturer is Mr Najeem Bashir. This is because of his strong support and guidance. He always created time out of his busy schedule to guide me and help me with any academic challenges.
