First Lady Oluremi Calls for Collective Action Against Cancer on World Cancer Day

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has reaffirmed her commitment to raising cancer awareness and ensuring equitable access to treatment for all Nigerians.

In a message shared on her official X handle on Tuesday, February 4, to mark World Cancer Day, she highlighted the urgent need for unity in the fight against the disease.

Senator Tinubu emphasized the significance of this year’s theme, “United by Unique,” which underscores the importance of personalized cancer treatment to meet individual patient needs.

“As we observe World Cancer Day today, we are reminded of the burden cancer places on millions of individuals and families in Nigeria and around the globe. This day serves as a reminder of our collective responsibility to combat this global health challenge,” she stated.

The First Lady acknowledged cancer as a leading cause of death in Nigeria but expressed optimism that through determination and partnerships, the country can change the narrative. She called for increased awareness, prioritization of screening, early detection, and equitable access to treatment, regardless of socio-economic status.

Senator Tinubu urged Nigerians to take proactive steps toward their health and support one another in the fight against cancer.

“Every individual deserves the opportunity to live a healthy life, free from the devastating impact of cancer. Let us unite to raise awareness and ensure that no one is left behind in accessing treatment,” she said.

She concluded her message with a prayer for divine protection, encouraging collective efforts in reducing the burden of cancer in the country.

World Cancer Day is observed annually on February 4 to promote awareness, encourage prevention, and push for improved access to care and treatment worldwide.
