FG Installs Surveillance Cameras on Third Mainland Bridge — Minister Umahi

The federal government has installed surveillance cameras on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos to enhance security and monitor traffic activities, according to Minister of Works, David Umahi.

Speaking on Sunday during a stakeholder engagement meeting on the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project, Umahi disclosed that the closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed on and beneath the bridge would be inaugurated soon.

The minister emphasized that officials from the ministry would be monitoring footage from the cameras in real time to enforce speed regulations and improve safety on the bridge.

“Let me also announce that we have extended the bridge rehabilitation to Falomo, making it a beautiful sight to behold from Third Mainland Bridge down to Falomo. We have installed streetlights and additional CCTV cameras along this stretch,” Umahi said.

He further stated that footage from these cameras would be transmitted to Abuja, similar to the monitoring system implemented for the Second Niger Bridge.

Umahi raised concerns over excessive speeding on the bridge, warning that if the situation persists, the government may be forced to install speed bumps, which could cause significant traffic congestion.

“We have to talk to our people. The speed there is terrible. If we put speed bumps, it will create heavy hold-ups on the bridge,” he cautioned.

The installation of these surveillance cameras is expected to enhance security and ensure better traffic management on one of Nigeria’s busiest bridges.
