FG Donates N500m to Nigerian Legion, Tinubu Hails Armed Forces’ Role

The Federal Government has donated N500 million to the Nigerian Legion in a show of support for the nation’s veterans and fallen heroes.

The announcement was made on Tuesday during the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Emblem and Appeal Fund Launch at the State House in Abuja.

President Bola Tinubu, speaking at the event, praised the Nigerian Armed Forces for their unwavering commitment to safeguarding the country amid its various security challenges.

He emphasized that without their efforts, the government’s reform initiatives and economic strategies would have little impact.

“No matter what economic theory we propagate or postulate, if there is no security, we cannot promote peace and development,” Tinubu stated, acknowledging the critical role the armed forces play in maintaining stability.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, made the N500 million donation announcement, marking a significant financial boost for the Nigerian Legion, which supports the welfare of retired military personnel and families of fallen soldiers.

President Tinubu also highlighted the government’s commitment to the welfare of security personnel, assuring that their sacrifices for the unity and progress of Nigeria would not be forgotten.

“We came today to remember our fallen heroes, men and women who have sacrificed their lives for this country’s unity, stability, and progress. We are committed to their values, principles, beliefs, and the unity and strength of this country,” he said, launching the 2025 emblem in their honor.

Minister of Defence, Abubakar Badaru, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his consistent support, particularly in ensuring the welfare of the armed forces and the families of those who have served the nation.

He urged Nigerians to support the Appeal Fund, which will provide essential services such as healthcare, education, and financial assistance to veterans and their families.

Retired Major General Abdulmalik Jibril, national chairman of the Nigeria Legion, commended the President for the historic donation, which he said would prevent the families of veterans from being neglected or left destitute.

The event was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, service chiefs, and representatives from various security and paramilitary agencies.
