The Federal Government has initiated payments to clear outstanding salaries owed to members of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) of Federal Universities and to settle benefits for retirees under the Nigerian Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme.

In a statement on Saturday, Bawa Mokwa, Director of Press and Public Relations for the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF), confirmed that payments to NASU members were underway, with numerous recipients reporting receipt of funds.

“The Federal Government has released funds for payment of withheld salary of Non-Academic Staff Union of Federal Universities,” the statement read.

Mokwa added that funds had also been disbursed for “payment of benefits to retirees under the Nigerian Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme Sector.”

The OAGF reiterated the government’s dedication to ensuring the welfare of Nigerian workers and retirees.

The release of funds follows an indefinite strike action initiated on Monday by the Joint Action Committee of SSANU and NASU over four months of unpaid salaries, leading to halted operations across universities in Nigeria.
