The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to addressing insecurity in the South-East, emphasizing that peace and security are critical for the region’s economic growth and prosperity.
During his operational visit to Enugu, the Minister engaged with military personnel, community stakeholders, and security agencies, underscoring the importance of collaborative strategies to combat rising security challenges.
Speaking to officers and personnel of the 82 Division/Joint Task Force South-East Operation Udo Ka, led by Major-General Hassan Dada, the Minister commended their efforts while urging them to intensify operations to ensure a safe environment.
“President Tinubu has directed me to engage with you all to find sustainable solutions to insecurity. Without security, there can be no peace or development,” Abubakar stated.
He highlighted the entrepreneurial spirit of the South-East and called for candid suggestions and actionable intelligence to bolster security measures in the region.
The Minister also visited the Nigerian Air Force Base in Emene, Enugu, and held discussions with traditional rulers, students, community leaders, and heads of security agencies. These engagements aimed to foster collaboration and generate practical solutions to security concerns.
Abubakar praised the progress achieved under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, noting a renewed determination to tackle insecurity nationwide, particularly in the South-East.
“There is a renewed determination to intensify our efforts against all forms of insecurity under President Tinubu’s leadership,” he asserted.
Major-General Hassan Dada, the General Officer Commanding 82 Division, assured the public of the Army’s readiness to ensure a peaceful festive season.
“Through the Joint Security Task Force in the South-East, code-named Operation Udo Ka, we aim to create a secure atmosphere that facilitates the usual mass return for Christmas,” he said.
Retired Major General John Nwoga raised concerns about the role of social media in exacerbating insecurity, emphasizing the need to combat the spread of misleading content.
“The circulation of old videos depicting criminal activities creates fear and panic. It is imperative for our people to collectively address the negative impact of fake news,” he urged.
The minister continued his operational tour to Imo State, visiting the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Okigwe, the 211 Quick Response Group of the Nigerian Air Force in Owerri, and the Naval Base in Oguta. He conveyed President Tinubu’s gratitude to the troops and encouraged them to build on their successes.
The Minister also paid a courtesy visit to Governor Hope Uzodimma, expressing appreciation for the governor’s support to the 82 Division and Operation Udo Ka.
“All the officers and men appreciate your unwavering assistance,” the Minister stated.
The Ministry of Defence reiterated its commitment to fostering a secure environment conducive to business and community growth in the South-East.
“We are determined to end insecurity in Nigeria,” the statement concluded.
