The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has initiated disciplinary proceedings against a police officer accused of harassing a woman during a stop-and-search operation in the Galadimawa area of Abuja.
A video of the incident, which occurred on the night of October 6, 2024, shows the woman accusing the officer of slapping her and using pepper spray on her eyes.
She explained that the officer became aggressive after she refused to step out of her vehicle for a search.
“I didn’t do anything to these guys, I didn’t carry anything, I am not a criminal. They asked me to come, I told them they could check my back and there was no need for me to come down. These guys started harassing me and used pepper spray on my eyes three times and slapped me,” she said in the video.
Responding to the incident, FCT Police Command spokesperson Josephine Adeh confirmed via X (formerly Twitter) that the officer involved had been identified by the victim.
“The police officer assigned to Galadimawa Roundabout for stop-and-search duties, who was seen harassing a woman at night on October 6, 2024, has been summoned. Disciplinary action and a trial have also commenced,” Adeh stated.
She encouraged the public to report any instances of police misconduct through the command’s designated complaint numbers.
