The Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) has taken strong disciplinary action against Plateau United, imposing a three-point and three-goal deduction after fans attacked the Enugu Rangers team bus and assaulted players following a goalless draw in Jos on Match Day 11.
The incident has raised significant concerns about fan behavior and safety in Nigerian football.
Following the match, Enugu Rangers’ management petitioned the NPFL, demanding an investigation into the attack, which left players injured and resulted in extensive damage to the team bus.
In response, Plateau United claimed that the altercation occurred outside the stadium and argued that they should not be held responsible.
However, after evaluating both sides, the league board determined that Plateau United failed to adequately control their supporters, holding the club accountable for the violent outburst.
In addition to the point and goal deductions, Plateau United faces a fine totaling N4 million—N2 million for security lapses and object-throwing incidents, and another N2 million for the failure to control fans.
The NPFL board also mandated that the club pay N250,000 each to an injured match official and a Rangers player as compensation.
Plateau United will also cover the repair costs for the damaged Rangers bus and other verified losses.
As part of the sanctions, Plateau United’s next three home games at New Jos Stadium will be played without spectators, a decision aimed at sending a strong message about the NPFL’s commitment to maintaining safety standards and preventing future incidents.
This disciplinary action reflects the NPFL’s effort to uphold player safety and ensure a respectful environment, signaling a serious commitment to addressing violence in Nigerian football.
