FAAN Justifies N580bn Estimate for Airport Runway Reconstruction

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has defended its N580 billion estimate for the reconstruction of 17 runways across the country.

FAAN’s Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, stated that the cost estimate also covers the repair of perimeter roads and fencing at several airports under its management.

Appearing on the Beyond 100 Days program on Television Continental (TVC) last night, Kuku explained that many of Nigeria’s airport runways have far exceeded their recommended lifespan of 20 to 25 years.

Some have been in use for over 30 years, requiring urgent reconstruction.

According to Kuku, 17 runways are in dire need of repairs, with the N580 billion estimate factoring in not just the runways but also critical infrastructure projects such as taxiway links, apron expansions, and safety measures to ensure a secure environment on the airside.

Kuku responded to critics questioning the high costs, encouraging them to research the complexities of runway construction and aviation infrastructure.

She emphasized that the goal was to maintain safe, modern airports that meet international standards.

Addressing concerns about her leadership, Kuku asserted her commitment to doing what is necessary for the improvement of Nigeria’s airport system, even if it meant stepping on some toes.

She added that she would resign if her methods proved ineffective, but reiterated that ensuring the safety and development of the country’s airports was her top priority.

FAAN’s plans come as part of a broader effort to improve the nation’s aviation infrastructure and make Nigerian airports safer and more efficient for both passengers and airline operations.
