Ex-legislators condemn impeachment process against Ondo Deputy Gov, Aiyedatiwa

Some former members of the Ondo State House of Assembly have voiced their disapproval of the process taken by the state legislature to impeach the Deputy Governor of the state, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

The ex-lawmakers, under the aegis of the Concerned All Progressives Congress’ Ex-Lawmakers in Ondo State, expressed concern that it is premature for the members of the 10th Assembly to prioritise the issue of impeachment while neglecting the numerous challenges currently facing the state.

While addressing newsmen during a press briefing in Akure, Abiodun Jerome, who spoke on behalf of the concerned former lawmakers, urged the state assembly to adhere to proper procedures and cautioned against causing unrest within the state.

Jerome emphasised the importance of the House of Assembly rising above reproach and distractions. He stressed the significance of upholding the principle of separation of powers and reminded the Assembly members that the eyes of the world are upon them during this critical period.

The group appealed to the House of Assembly to exercise restraint, exercise due diligence, and ensure that they handle the impeachment process in a fair and transparent manner.

They urged the Assembly to focus on addressing the pressing issues affecting the state and its citizens rather than expending their energies solely on the impeachment proceedings.

“As former lawmakers, we have the responsibility to draw attention to all forms of abnormalities we observe so that the general public is not misled.

“Although we could have ordinarily ignored the shenanigans of the orchestrators of the dastardly act, however, we are compelled by the trust once held by us with the political responsibilities as representatives of our various constituencies.

“It is on this note that we challenge the present Assembly not to endorse a bad precedent by going ahead with this planned impeachment of the deputy governor.

“This is one impeachment too many! Today it is Lucky; tomorrow it could be anyone. There is life after the House of Assembly. A word is enough for the wise!”
