Ex-AGF Accuses EFCC of Withholding Key Statements in N109.5bn Fraud Trial

Ahmed Idris, the Former Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF), made a striking revelation before an Abuja High Court on the 7th of May, 2025, accusing the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of selective presentation of his statements during their probe.

In a session dubbed a trial-within-trial and presided over by Justice Yusuf Halilu, Idris pointed out that “only 13 of the 16 statements he made were tendered in court, excluding three that detailed the role of government officials and agencies in the consultancy at the center of the case.”

This session was triggered by Idris‘ lead counsel, Chris Uche (SAN), who objected to the admissibility of the EFCC-obtained statements, citing “alleged deception and inducement.”

Idris is standing trial alongside Geoffrey Olusegun Akindele, Mohammed Kudu Usman, and Gezawa Commodity Market and Exchange Limited. They are jointly battling “14 counts of alleged theft and fraudulent diversion of N109.5 billion in public funds.”

While testifying, Idris described a troubling interrogation process. He said “his statements, particularly those dated June 10, June 27, and July 5, 2022, were made without legal representation and under circumstances where he was directed on what to write by EFCC investigators.”

He also refuted claims that his lawyer was ever present during questioning and stressed that “none of his statements were video recorded, as required for proper documentation of cautionary confessions.”

Justice Halilu has fixed the 17th of July, 2025, for the prosecution to cross-examine Idris.
