Employee awaits sentencing after pleading guilty for gambling with employer’s N900k

A 23-year-old supermarket employee, Abiola Agbaje, found himself in hot water on Tuesday after pleading guilty to gambling with his employer’s money.

The incident was brought before the Ejigbo Magistrate Court, where Agbaje faced charges of stealing and breach of the peace.

According to ASP Benedict Aigbokhan, the prosecutor, Agbaje committed the offences on June 26 at around 2:00 p.m. at No. 1, Rasaki Tijan Street, Igando, Ikotun.

Agbaje, whose address was not provided, allegedly used N900,000 of his employer’s funds to place bets on the Bet Naija platform without permission from his employer, Mr. Yemi Liasu.

Aigbokhan stated that Agbaje’s actions not only violated his employer’s trust but also risked causing a public disturbance.

The prosecutor noted that the offences contravened Sections 168(d) and 287(7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos, 2015.

The defendant’s guilty plea was heard by Magistrate Miss K. A. Ariyo, who adjourned the case until July 12 for a review of the facts and sentencing.

This case highlights the serious consequences of misusing entrusted funds and the potential legal repercussions of gambling with other people’s money.
