Sea Pirates Abduct 10 Maritime Workers on Bonny–Port Harcourt

No less than 10 maritime travelers are feared to have been abducted by sea pirates along the Bonny–Port Harcourt waterway, in what is the latest in a series of piracy incidents in the region.

The incident, which reportedly occurred in the early hours of Monday, involved 10 persons who were traveling between Bonny Island and Port Harcourt.

Although details remain sketchy, local sources have confirmed the abduction, raising concerns over the safety of maritime travel in the area.

“It’s not a rumor, it is real. Ten persons have been kidnapped this morning coming from Bonny to Port Harcourt. We’ve reported to the security agencies,” said Israel Pepple, the district Chairman of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, Rivers State district, in a phone conversation with Channels Television.

The abduction has prompted swift action from law enforcement agencies. The Police Public Relations Officer confirmed that they are aware of the situation and are taking steps to secure the release of the victims.

“The Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, has mandated the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, DCP Olugbenga Adepoju, and the DPOs in that area to make sure the victims regain their freedom as soon as possible,” the police spokesperson said.

As security agencies intensify their efforts to locate and rescue the abducted individuals, the incident highlights the persistent threat posed by piracy and the need for enhanced maritime security along Nigeria’s waterways.
