Council of Elders of the apex Igbo socio-political organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has urged its President General, Prof. George Obiozor, to ensure a legal representation of the body at the ongoing trial of former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu in London.
Ekweremadu alongside his wife, Beatrice is currently facing organ harvesting charge in a London Court.
Chairman, Council of Elders of the body, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, in a letter addressed to Senate President Ahmad Lawan, entitled, “Travail of our illustrious son Senator Ike Ekweremadu”, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo World Wide expressed its determination to defend any honest and patriotic citizen whose right and freedom is being unduly trampled upon anywhere in the world.”
According to Iwuanyanwu, the news of Ekweremadu and his wife’s arrest was received with shock in many places, especially within the rank and file of the umbrella body of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, where Ekweremadu is a very active member.
He, however, said it is heartening that the true story about Ekweremadu and his wife’s predicament had begun to emerge.
The statement read, “We do not have any doubt whatsoever that the truth will emerge and our son and his wife will be vindicated. We are however happy and profoundly appreciative of your solidarity to your dear colleague and friend during this trying period.”
The Ohanaeze elders also prayed for divine healing for Ekweremadu’s ailing daughter.
On Thursday, respite came the way of the Ekweremadus when the Crown Court ruled that the alleged organ donor was not a minor.
