The Ekiti State government has launched an initiative providing street traders with six months of rent-free market stalls to promote commerce and reduce street trading.
The programme, which covers stalls at Oja Oba, Agric-Olope, and Awedele markets, is part of Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s efforts to mark his administration’s second anniversary.
Omotayo Adeola, Commissioner for Trade, Industry, Investment, and Cooperatives, announced the scheme, stating, “The government is offering stalls on an annual rent basis, with the first six months free to help alleviate the financial pressures on street traders.”
While the rent will be waived for the initial period, traders will still need to cover utility costs such as electricity and sanitation. The commissioner warned that street trading laws will be strictly enforced after the stall allocations are completed.
Traders can apply at Oja Oba’s Facility Management Office, and partnerships between small traders are encouraged to maximise space.
In addition to supporting traders, the government plans to stabilise food prices by purchasing surplus produce during harvest periods, ensuring a steady supply of affordable food.
Commissioner for Information, Taiwo Olatunbosun, commended the state’s progress, noting achievements in agriculture, infrastructure, and small business development.
He called on residents to continue supporting the government’s initiatives to sustain Ekiti’s development.
