As the Super Eagles gear up to face Rwanda in Uyo on Monday, interim head coach Augustine Eguavoen is determined to end the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers on a high, maintaining his side’s unbeaten record.
Nigeria has already secured qualification for the AFCON finals in Morocco next year, thanks to Rwanda’s earlier failure to secure a favorable result against Libya.
This rendered the Eagles’ recent game against Benin a mere formality, but they still managed a draw, keeping their qualifying streak intact with three wins and two draws.
Speaking ahead of the clash with Rwanda, Eguavoen emphasized the importance of maintaining their unbeaten run and showcasing dominance in front of home fans.
“Coming into this game, we haven’t lost a game. So we have to maintain that standard and try to win the game, worst case scenario draw,” Eguavoen stated. “Nigeria is a team that is respected, almost won the AFCON the last time, so we have to maintain that standard.”
Despite the team’s positive momentum, uncertainty looms over Eguavoen’s tenure as head coach.
His role as an interim manager has been under scrutiny, with no guarantees about his future after the qualifiers.
The next competitive fixtures for the Super Eagles are slated for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers during the March international break.
For now, Eguavoen remains focused on ensuring Nigeria closes out their qualifiers with a statement performance, reinforcing their status as one of Africa’s elite teams while making a case for his continued leadership.
