. EFCC operatives, Kogi Gov’s security details exchange fire
There was sporadic gunshots, on Wednesday, as Kogi State Governor, Usman Ododo, departed the Abuja residence of his predecessor, Yahaya Bello.
Earlier, armed operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had stormed Bello’s residence to arrest him.
However, after hours of laying siege to the former Kogi governor’s residence without succeeding in their mission, the EFCC operatives had reinforced with backup support from the Police and Department of State Services.
It was learnt that the EFCC and the other security agencies were planning to forcefully arrest Bello before Ododo’s arrival.
But Ododo, who drove into Bello’s compound, left after a while.
But as he was leaving, the EFCC operatives got the hint that Bello was being smuggled out in the Kogi Governor’s vehicle, forcing the anti-graft agency’s operatives who had been keeping vigil for hours to suddenly open fire.
Following the commotion that resulted from this, protesters, journalists, onlookers and passers-by had to scampered for safety to escape being hit by stray bullets during the shootout.
Later normalcy was restored and the security operatives left the area they had cordoned for hours one after the other.
EFCC is yet to speak on the reason behind the siege. Its spokesman, Dele Oyewale, did not pick calls made to his mobile phone.
He also didn’t reply a text message sent to him as at the time of filling this report.
But it was learnt that the move to arrest Bello was in connection with the alleged N84 billion fraud case preferred against him by the EFCC.
