The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has apprehended 56 individuals suspected of engaging in internet fraud activities in Kwara State.
The arrests were made between Tuesday and Wednesday at various locations in Ilorin, the state capital.
Dele Oyewale, the EFCC’s Head of Media and Advocacy, disclosed this development in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja.
He stated that the operation was conducted following credible intelligence on the activities of fraudsters who have been causing distress to unsuspecting citizens through their fraudulent schemes.
“Items recovered from them include 18 different brands of exotic cars, laptops, expensive smartphones, and charms,” Oyewale revealed.
He added, “The suspects would be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of the ongoing investigations.”
The EFCC spokesperson emphasized that the commission remains committed to combating cybercrime and financial fraud in the country. He urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies.
The arrests underscore the EFCC’s intensified efforts to clamp down on internet fraudsters, commonly known as “Yahoo boys,” who exploit digital platforms to defraud individuals both within Nigeria and internationally.
Authorities have assured that all suspects will be prosecuted in accordance with the law once investigations are completed.
