Edo Decides: Ighodalo, Akpata, Okpebholo in Tight Race as Voters Cast Ballots in Gov’ship Poll

Voters in Edo State are at the polls today, September 21st, to elect a new governor in a highly anticipated election that will determine the successor to Governor Godwin Obaseki, whose tenure ends in November. The election is taking place across 4,519 polling units in all 18 local government areas of the state.

After months of intense campaigns and political maneuvering, three main candidates have emerged as frontrunners in the race: Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP), and Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC). These candidates are vying for the chance to lead the state for the next four years, with each party emphasizing their commitment to improving the lives of Edo residents and ensuring the state’s development.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) cleared 17 political parties to contest in this pivotal election, but the contest is largely seen as a three-way race between the PDP, APC, and LP.

Election day in Edo has seen an early start, with polling stations opening across the state. Security measures have been tightened to ensure a smooth voting process, as concerns over political tension and security threats have been raised in recent weeks.

Voters have expressed optimism that the election will bring in a leader capable of addressing the state’s challenges, including economic development, security, and youth empowerment. INEC has also assured the public of its commitment to conducting a free, fair, and transparent election.

As results begin to trickle in after the close of voting, the people of Edo eagerly await the announcement of their new governor.

The election is expected to set the tone for the state’s political future, as it remains a significant battleground for Nigeria’s major political parties.
