The Edo State House of Assembly took significant steps in supporting the new administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo, approving his nominee Samson Osagie as Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice on Wednesday, while discussions around the state’s budget took center stage.
Samson Osagie, a former two-term member of the Edo Assembly and a one-time federal representative for Orhionmwon/Uhunmwonde, received swift confirmation from lawmakers due to his extensive legislative background and the critical role of his position in the new government.
Speaker Blessing Agbebaku acknowledged Osagie’s prior service by allowing him to “take a bow,” a traditional gesture extended to former legislators in recognition of their contributions.
Alongside the confirmation, Governor Okpebholo presented the House with a supplementary budget proposal, marking a proactive attempt to align fiscal resources with the priorities of his administration.
This budget proposal aims to adjust the 2024 budget previously amended under former Governor Godwin Obaseki, signaling an effort to reallocate funds in line with Okpebholo’s new governance agenda.
The Speaker promptly directed the Appropriations Committee to evaluate the request within a week, preparing it for consideration and potential approval.
Additionally, the House will deliberate on Okpebholo’s nomination of Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole as Commissioner for Health on November 18, 2024. Oshiomhole, son of former Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole, is expected to bring expertise to the health sector amid hopes of advancing healthcare outcomes for Edo’s citizens.
Governor Okpebholo’s early actions — from strategic appointments to budget adjustments — reflect his commitment to aligning his government’s vision with the state’s immediate and long-term needs.
As the Assembly continues its evaluation process, Edo’s residents watch closely, hoping for swift and impactful policy implementations in the new administration.
