Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, has led a delegation from his senatorial district in donating ₦200 million to support victims of the recent devastating flood in Maiduguri, the state capital.
The donation comes in response to the catastrophic flood caused by the collapse of the Alau Dam on September 10, marking the worst flooding incident in Borno State in 30 years.
The disaster displaced over 400,000 residents and claimed more than 30 lives, leaving many in urgent need of relief and recovery efforts.
Ndume, accompanied by Borno State Deputy Governor Umar Kadafur, presented the donation during a visit to Governor Babagana Zulum. The funds, raised by the people of southern Borno, both at home and abroad, were aimed at providing immediate assistance to those affected by the flood.
“The contribution was in response to calls for assistance for those affected by the flood,” Ndume explained.
Kadafur, who handed over the ₦200 million cheque to Governor Zulum, expressed deep appreciation to those who contributed to the relief effort.
“We are here not only to sympathise with you but to present a cheque of ₦200 million to the state government flood basket fund,” Kadafur said.
“We want to assure you that you are not alone, as the people of southern Borno are strongly behind you in this trying moment. More donations from southern Borno are still being expected.”
Governor Zulum, in his response, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the generous support and called for continued unity among the people to foster meaningful development in the state.
In addition to meeting with the governor, the delegation visited the palace of the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Umar-Garbai El-Kanemi, whose residence was also affected by the flood. The royal father was presented with a ₦10 million donation in support of his palace’s recovery efforts.
In a separate gesture of solidarity, members of the Borno State House of Assembly also paid a sympathy visit to Governor Zulum, contributing ₦60 million to aid flood victims.
The ongoing relief efforts underscore the collective commitment of Borno State’s leaders and residents to rebuild and support those impacted by the natural disaster.
