Minister of Art, Culture and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, has responded to ongoing criticism regarding her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate, insisting that she did not violate any laws.
In an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Musawa firmly stated, “I didn’t break the law,” addressing the concerns about her failure to present an NYSC certificate during her Senate confirmation.
The controversy stems from allegations that Musawa did not fulfill the mandatory NYSC requirement, but in April 2024, a Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed the case.
Justice James Omotosho ruled that the plaintiffs had no legal standing to pursue the matter, a decision Musawa believes has resolved the issue legally.
Musawa emphasised that she is committed to her ministerial duties, saying, “The matter had been adjudicated and one day, I will come out with my account. I have probably done more NYSC than you (presenter). I have done at least two NYSCs in my life.”
She continued, “I think what I owe Nigerians is to say that I didn’t do anything wrong. I didn’t break the law. The NYSC I did and finished. That is the much I can tell you. Everything I did was by the law.”
Musawa also mentioned that, while she will eventually share the full details of her NYSC experience, her priority right now is serving the country: “One day I will come out with my account of what happened to set the record straight. As of now, I think it is important for me to focus on giving Nigerians the deliverables.”
