Colombia on Wednesday defeated Flamingos on penalties to book a place in the final of the ongoing 2022 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in India.
After regulation time, the game was over and heading for penalties. Then, Colombia overcame the Nigerian girls 5-6 to advance to Sunday’s final.
The Nigerian women got the game going well by camped inside Colombia’s half during the opening period. They were unfortunate to rattle the woodwork in the 29th minute and later surrendered the advantage as the South Americans controlled the rhythm.
They scored just before halftime, but the goal was disallowed because of an offside in the buildup.
The Nigerians were able to repel the Colombians’ repeated attacks as they attempted to score a goal.
The game was headed toward penalties since neither team could score. Edafe Omamuzo, who scored Nigeria’s winning kick against the US, struck the woodwork in what may have been the deciding kick as Colombia lost their second attempt.
After that, the South Americans won all of their penalty kicks, and Nigeria’s final attempt, made by Comfort Folorunsho, was unsuccessful.
The girls of Coach Bankole Olowookere won three of their four games on the way to the game on Wednesday. After losing to Germany in their opening match, victories over New Zealand and Chile guaranteed their place in the round of eight.
After normal time ended 1-1 against the US, the squad needed penalties to win.
Nigeria will play the loser of the other semi-final between Spain and Germany for third place. That day is Sunday.
The competition’s final is anticipated to take place on the same day.
