Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has hailed the construction of 40 new judges’ quarters in Abuja’s Katampe District, noting that the project will greatly enhance judicial performance in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony on Monday, she said the initiative represents a significant commitment by the government to the well-being of judicial officers.

“Beyond the courtroom, a supportive and conducive living environment is essential to their ability to focus on the heavy responsibility entrusted to them,” she said, stressing the need for judges to have peace of mind to function effectively.

“Judicial officers require peace of mind, security, and comfort in their residences to fully dedicate themselves to the rigorous task of interpreting and applying the law. The construction of these residences is a practical step towards ensuring that judicial officers are well-supported,” Justice Kekere-Ekun added.

She pointed out that a judge’s ability to perform is closely linked to their mental well-being and living conditions.

“These homes will provide a secure and tranquil environment, enabling judicial officers to perform their duties with greater focus, efficiency, and clarity of mind,” she said.

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, echoed her sentiments on the importance of judges’ welfare, particularly housing.

He stressed that providing housing would empower judges to deliver judgments without fear.

“Mr. President said we must at all times provide housing, but that can only be better if we have owner-occupier [homes] so that every judge will know that at the end of the day, I’m retiring from office, I have my own home. With this, it would be difficult for anybody to manipulate or interfere when you have a home,” Wike said.

He confirmed that 70% of the project funds had been released following approval by the Federal Executive Council, with 20 units allocated to the FCT High Court, 10 to the Federal High Court, and 10 to the Court of Appeal.

Other notable figures at the event included the President of the Court of Appeal of Nigeria, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem.
