Police in Lagos have arraigned a broadcaster, Uche Igwe, for allegedly sharing on Twitter video of a 10-year-old Chrisland school’s female student engaging in sex with her male colleague.
Igwe, 40, was arraigned before a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in the state and charged with two counts of cyberstalking and breach of peace.
But the accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Recall that a video clip in which five students of Chrisland Schools, Lagos, were engaged in sex at a World Schools’ Games in Dubai, went viral last month on social media.
But in a swift reaction, the Lagos State Government shut all the branches of the school in the state. It later reopened them.
Prosecution counsel attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Mr Augustine Nwabuisi, told the court that the accused committed the offences on April 18, on his Twitter handle.
The prosecutor said that the defendant intentionally sent the sex video to his personal Twitter handle @uchedark for public viewing without the consent of the student’s parents or the school.
He argued that the alleged offences contravened Section 24 (1) (a) (b) (i) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition and Prevention) Act of 2015, and Section 168 (d) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 and carries 10 years’ jail term for cyberstalking, while the breach of peace is punishable with three months’ imprisonment under same law.
Chief Magistrate, Mrs Adeola Adedayo, however, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N10 million with three sureties in like sum.
The chief magistrate also ruled that the sureties must submit their National Identification Numbers and their Lagos State Residents Registration Agency cards.
The court further ruled that one of the sureties must be a land owner.
It, however, stated that all the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and must be gainfully employed with evidence of three years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
The court adjourned the matter till June 13 for mention.
