In a surprising turn of events, Augustine Eguavoen has been reappointed as the interim manager of the Nigerian national football team, the Super Eagles.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) made the announcement today after negotiations with German coach Bruno Labbadia fell through.
The NFF had been in advanced talks with Labbadia, who has managed several Bundesliga clubs, including VfB Stuttgart and Hertha Berlin.
However, sources close to the situation revealed that both parties could not reach an agreement on key terms, leading to the breakdown of negotiations.
In response to the situation, the NFF has turned to Eguavoen, a former Super Eagles captain and experienced coach, to guide the team through its upcoming fixtures.
Eguavoen, who previously led Nigeria to a third-place finish at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations, is expected to stabilize the team as the NFF continues its search for a permanent head coach.
This appointment marks Eguavoen’s third stint as head coach of the Super Eagles, having previously taken on the role in 2005-2007 and briefly in 2021 during the African Cup of Nations campaign.
Eguavoen’s immediate task will be to prepare the Super Eagles for their next round of international matches, with fans eagerly waiting to see how he will manage a squad rich in talent but in need of strong leadership.
