BREAKING: Chief of Army Staff, Lagbaja, Dies at 56

In a solemn announcement, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, conveyed the nation’s grief over the passing of Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, at the age of 56.

Lt. General Lagbaja passed away on Tuesday night in Lagos following an illness.

Born on February 28, 1968, Lt. General Lagbaja was appointed Chief of Army Staff on June 19, 2023, marking a pivotal chapter in his distinguished career under President Tinubu’s administration.

His journey in the military began when he entered the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1987. He graduated five years later, on September 19, 1992, with a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Infantry Corps as part of the 39th Regular Course.

Throughout his career, Lt. General Lagbaja was celebrated for his dedication, integrity, and leadership. Rising through the ranks, he served in various critical roles, including platoon commander in the 93 Battalion and the 72 Special Forces Battalion.

His strategic acumen was instrumental in numerous internal security missions, such as Operation ZAKI in Benue State, Lafiya Dole in Borno, Udoka in the Southeast, and Operation Forest Sanity across Kaduna and Niger States.

Lt. General Lagbaja’s commitment to professional development was evident through his academic achievements.

He was an alumnus of the U.S. Army War College, where he earned a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies—a testament to his dedication to advancing military excellence and national security.

Survived by his wife, Mariya, and their two children, Lt. General Lagbaja leaves behind a legacy of service, honor, and commitment to Nigeria’s peace and security.

His family, friends, and comrades remember him as a dedicated patriot who made immense contributions to the Nigerian Armed Forces and the nation.

In his tribute, President Tinubu expressed “heartfelt condolences to the family and the Nigerian Armed Forces during this difficult time.”

The President honored Lt. General Lagbaja’s “significant contributions to the nation” and offered wishes for his eternal peace, underscoring the impact of his service on the country’s safety and stability.

As Nigeria mourns this loss, Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja’s legacy will remain a benchmark of dedication and courage for future generations within the Armed Forces.
